Exploring new dense housing supply without causing mass displacement and gentrification along the IBX.
The proposed IBX (Interborough Express) is a new rapid transit line that would connect Brooklyn and Queens. The line sits on an existing freight rail corrider owned by the LIRR, that operates 2 times a day. The proposed new line would be 14 miles long and connect to 19 existing train stations.
Given this once-in-a-generation transportation infrastructure project, our group was interested in exploring how this new line would impact existing and future communities. Specifically, how can we promote new dense housing supply to increase public transit usage without causing mass displacement and gentrification of existing communities?
The presentation below is the culminative result of our research. The following datasets were used: MTA Stations and Complexes (from the MTA), IBX Station Shapefile (ArcGIS), ACS Data (2023, 5-year), NYC Open Data, and NYC Zoning Districts. Data analysis and visualization was completed in R.
